How To Clean Clear Dental Aligners And Retainers

Clear dental aligners are quickly becoming the number one way people choose to straighten their teeth. From Invisalign and ClearCorrect to Smile Direct Club, SnapCorrect, and Smilelove, people are flocking to this discreet way to get the smile of their dreams.

Unlike traditional braces, aligners and retainers need to be removed and cleaned several times a day to prevent plaque and bacteria from building up inside of the aligners and causing cavities.

Here is a list of the most effective ways to keep your aligners and clear retainers sparkling clean and perfectly clear.

1. Liquid hand soap and a soft toothbrush. This method is recommended by many aligners companies. It's also very convenient because soap is available in every bathroom. You need to be careful when you're brushing not to bend or break your aligners but still do a thorough job.

2. If scrubbing your aligners is just not for you, you can purchase a special cleaning solution that is specifically formulated to clean your aligners by soaking. Check out Retainer Brite yourself HERE (Amazon Affiliate Link).

3. Another very frugal soaking option for cleaning your aligners/retainers is hydrogen peroxide. All you have to do is pour some hydrogen peroxide in a small dish and soak your aligners in it while you're eating. I must say that this very affordable method is one of my favorites.

4. Here's a cool option if you want to whiten your teeth and clean your aligners at the same time. It's a foam that you spray into your trays and it cleans them and also contains special ingredients that will whiten your teeth at the same time. Now that's awesome! Check out EverSmile HERE!

5. The last method I would like to mention is Sonic Cleaning. This method has been used for years in the jewelry industry to keep rings and necklaces sparkling clean. This technology also works effectively for cleaning dental aligners and retainers. Retainer Brite combines their effective cleaning solution with a sonic powered machine to keep your aligners in sparkling clean condition. Check it out HERE!

Now that you know the best ways to keep your aligners clean, let's go over a few cleaning methods that are best avoided.

1. Soaking or brushing aligners with mouthwash. Mouthwash may contain ingredients that stain or damage aligners so it is best to be avoided.

2. Toothpaste and toothbrush. Using this method infrequently is likely okay, however toothpaste often contains micro abrasives that over time may scratch your aligners and reduce their clarity.

3. Vinegar. It seems like everyone uses vinegar for everything these days. Vinegar is very acidic and can damage aligners, not to mention your teeth! It's best to skip the vinegar when it comes to cleaning aligners.

4. Washing your aligners in hot water or in the dishwasher. Hot water is not recommended to be used on aligners as it will soften and warp them. Likewise, it's not a good idea to put your aligners through the dishwasher as they may melt or get lost.

I hope these tips were helpful. I wish you the best on your journey to a perfect smile.
