10 Simple Ways To Save Money At The Grocery Store

1. Check your local grocery store flyer online to see what foods are on sale. Try to have an idea of the regular price of your most purchased items to help figure out if an advertised special is actually a good deal or not.

2. Make a meal plan on grocery day and decide what you are going to eat for each day of the week. You can even get creative by taking requests, allowing each family member to pick one meal of their choosing! Mr. Keen Koala loves mushroom soup and often requests it.

3. Make a grocery list based on your meal plan and stick to it.

4. Always grocery shop on a full stomach so you won't be tempted to make impulse purchases in the junk food aisle.

5. Try to shop the perimeter of the store as much as possible. This is where you will find a plethora of wholesome ingredients such as fruit, vegetables, meat and meat alternatives to feed your family.

6. When items like toilet paper or other non-perishable items that you frequently use go on mega sale, purchase a few extra and store these items in a cool, dry area for future use. Just make sure not to buy so much that the items expire before you have a chance to use them.

7. If you are able to, always shop alone. It is easier to stick to a list when you don't have friends or tiny humans encouraging you to buy items that you had never intended to.

8. In regards to staple items such as milk and bread, figure out how much your family uses between shopping trips. This way, you can buy enough that you don't run out, eliminating the need to pay the inflated prices at convenience stores.

9. If you don't already know how, learn to cook meals from scratch. There are plenty of fun videos on YouTube that will teach you how to cook pretty much anything. Cooking from scratch saves money and creates hearty wholesome meals. One of our favorites is lentil soup. It's so satisfying and costs very little to make, with tons of left-overs to pack in lunches the next day.

10. This last tip is an important one. Make a monthly household budget. Take your income and subtract all of your fixed and variable expenses. Factor in a monthly amount to spend on groceries. If you shop weekly, divide this amount by four. Trying to stick to a weekly budget will help you stay on target with your goals.
